Ranking Member Thompson Statement on DHS Designating January 6 a National Special Security Event
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security and former Chairman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, released the below statement on the Department of Homeland Security designating the joint session of Congress on January 6 as a National Special Security Event:
“The January 6th Select Committee recommended that the joint session of Congress to count the electoral college certificates be designated a National Special Security Event, and I applaud the decision to provide additional resources to secure the event and protect American democracy in the process. However, we all know the only reason such a designation is necessary is Donald Trump. I look forward to the time when this administrative function assigned to Congress under the Constitution can operate like any other day on the congressional calendar.”
